After nearly three decades of planning, the Port Everglades Sand Bypass Project begins. Broward Mayor Beam Furr says this will protect miles of shoreline in Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach and Hollywood by moving sand on the north side of the Port's inlet to the south side. He says without the initiative, south side beaches would continue eroding damaging infrastructure, reducing recreational space and endangering sea turtle nesting habitats. The project will take a year to complete and will cost some eighty million dollars.
